Microsoft Build 2026: Seven MAI Models, Windows Agent Runtime, Microsoft IQ

Satya Nadella unveils 7 in-house MAI models led by MAI-Thinking-1 (reasoning). Windows becomes agent-native OS with local sandboxing, agentic shell, and new WSL. Microsoft IQ (GA) grounds agents in Work IQ (M365), Fabric IQ (data), Foundry IQ (models). Three themes: intelligence that's yours, full stack your way, what comes next.

The Break from OpenAI Is Complete

For years, Microsoft's AI strategy was "OpenAI + Azure + distribution." At Build 2026, Satya Nadella made it official: Microsoft now has its own models. Seven of them, branded MAI (Microsoft AI), led by MAI-Thinking-1 — a reasoning model that goes head-to-head with OpenAI's o3 and Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet thinking mode.

This isn't a research project. MAI models are live in GitHub Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, and the new MAI Playground. The OpenAI partnership continues, but the dependency is broken. Microsoft now controls its model destiny.

Windows as the Agent Runtime

The sleeper announcement: Windows Agent Runtime. Not "Windows for AI developers" — Windows is the agent runtime. Key capabilities:

  • Local sandboxing: Agents run in isolated environments with policy-controlled filesystem/network access
  • Agentic shell: Terminal and shell rewritten for agent-native interaction (not human CLI)
  • WSL evolution: Linux subsystem now supports agent workloads natively
  • NPU integration: Copilot+ PCs run agents locally via MAI-Small on NPU

This turns every Windows machine (1.4B+ active devices) into an agent node. The distribution advantage is staggering.

Microsoft IQ: The Context Layer

Nadella's phrase: "Intelligence that's truly yours." Microsoft IQ is the context engine that grounds agents in your organization, not just world knowledge. Three components, all GA:

  • Work IQ: Workplace intelligence from M365 — emails, meetings, documents, org graph, how work actually flows
  • Fabric IQ: Semantic layer over structured business data (OneLake, Dataverse, SQL)
  • Foundry IQ: Model selection, optimization, and routing for the task at hand

Work IQ APIs go GA June 16. This is the first programmatic access to the Microsoft 365 work graph — the institutional knowledge that no competitor can replicate.

Three Themes, One Strategy

Nadella anchored the keynote on three pillars:

  1. Intelligence that's yours — Your context, your data, your agents, your control
  2. Full stack your way — Silicon (Maia/Cobalt) to OS (Windows) to tools (VS Code, GitHub) to cloud (Azure) — heterogeneous, model-diverse
  3. What comes next — Science and research amplification (AI for materials, biology, physics)

The message: Microsoft isn't selling models. It's selling your intelligence, amplified.

The Coding Agent Play

MAI-Thinking-1 and MAI-Coder go straight into GitHub Copilot and VS Code. Microsoft's advantage: they own the IDE (VS Code), the repo (GitHub), the CI/CD (Actions), the cloud (Azure), and now the model (MAI). The entire developer loop is first-party.

CNBC reported Microsoft emphasizing "lower price relative to alternatives" for their coding model. The bundle economics work: Copilot seat includes model inference, no per-token billing surprise.

Strategic Signal

Microsoft's vertical stack is now the most complete for enterprise:

  • Identity/governance: Entra ID + Purview + Defender — unified for agents
  • Data gravity: M365 Graph + Fabric + SQL — the richest enterprise dataset
  • Developer lock-in: VS Code + GitHub + Azure — the default workflow
  • Model sovereignty: MAI family + OpenAI + open models — choose per task

Google has the consumer distribution. Anthropic has the coding agent lead. Microsoft has the enterprise operating system for agents.

What to Watch

  • MAI-Thinking-1 independent eval on enterprise reasoning tasks (not MMLU)
  • Work IQ API adoption — first mover on programmatic M365 work graph
  • Windows Agent Runtime SDK GA timeline — currently preview
  • Copilot Extensions ecosystem — will ISVs build or stay platform-agnostic?

The Bottom Line

Microsoft Build 2026 completed the vertical stack. Seven models. Agent-native Windows. Context layer that knows your business. The enterprise agent OS just shipped. 🔥
